Well while we patiently wait for booking agents to return our calls and get us shows booked across America..I wanted to take some time and blog about a guitar i HAVE, THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE GLOBE ARE VERY INTRESTED IN.....this will be short and sweet ....I stumbled onto these pictures and felt..i should blog a bit about it...I have a love /slight hate relation with this guitar....only on a physical level...and it is not the guitars fault but the builder..who made it for me...that i have more of a gripe with, but fuck it ..whats done is done....
The Photos below were shot by my buddy Javier Garcia..@ University of Texas at Brownsville"s Hunter Room Special Collections Area of the Library ...back in Winter or early Spring of 2005..I worked there along with some great people along with Javier...who after a hard day of cataloging a boatload of old books...I pulled out my Jerry Garcia Guitar and we took some pictures ....The guitar is built of Mesquite Wood and other Texas Woods...Ash..Red Oak..Maple..ebony...and other woods...The Guitar was built by Phiga Guitars here in Brownsville Texas..modelled on the Stephen Cripe Jerry Bolt Guitar..
.this was the 1st guitar Phil built in the Jerry series...the very 1st one that led him to fame and fortune building some of the finest Jerry Garcia series..guitars in the world ! all due to most of my ideas...Thank You very much !
but on mine there is one huge fuck up...I specifically told Phil to wait on drilling the control layout until i was there with him to guide him with what I wanted....did he listen..? hell no !!! he went ahead and did his thing ..and the control layout is very very tight...almost like a traffic jam..!!! as you can clearly see in the pictures..!
well now I have to live with it...but saying that the guitar plays beautifully ! the neck is amazing..my choice of Allen Holdsworth Pickups has got to be a defining point in this guitar...when ever I jam with another guitarist...i COMPLETELY WIPE THEM OUT FREQUENCY WISE ! this guitar dominates the midrange are of the electric guitar like crazy.....so that is very kool...but the controls really do mess me up sometimes badly..! it is a beautiful guitar though he took alot of love and care building my guitar and he did tune and chamber out the body...the neck feels fantastic..the weight is nice and does not hurt your back..it is well balanced...its crazy with just a little more attention from Phil to my wishes.. the guitar would have been perfect ! I have not recorded any albums with it..yet, but I have played live with this guitar ..in Texas and Alabama...people just drop thier jaws when they see my Jerry guitar its funny...but I almost never say anything about the layout of the controls...
My Jerry Phiga is one of a kind...something that helped spurn some, if not all the neo/Jerry Garcia replica builders since 2003.the year this guitar was built.....I know I have had many many emails and calls about this guitar its crazy....from Deadheads and guitar builders..and players....I almost sold it several times....due to my love / slight..hate relationship with it...and Phil...ha ha ! ....but have decided just to keep it..despite its control layout quirk...in the end the guitar plays very well..and it sounds beautiful..and powerful...and it looks amazing...after all I picked the woods...which became the top...and for that.... I.... Thank Dave Wilhite of Brownsville Texas The WoodMill Cabinet Shop..he sold me and gave me some beautiful...beautiful slices of Mesquite wood for the guitars top and back...thank you soo much Dave !!! Phil matched the wood up extremely well I should say...but...so long as I dont mess with all the controls much ! the guitar is a dream to play..!!!...the controls are wild and its got a boatload of them...piezo..under each saddle ..3 Carvin Holdsworth pickups with coil split and phase..on each...effects loop...and a mix knob also !!! way more than any Jerry Garcia Tribute I have seen...and I almost bet my bottom dollar sonically this guitar will be more dominant in any mix with most guitars ..!
